About This Spot

Stepping into Rue d’Alger feels like uncovering a quiet corner of the Mediterranean heart tucked away in the lively streets of Amsterdam. This small, intimate spot welcomes you with a subtle warmth—a gentle hum of thoughtfully selected music, the soft glow of lights, and the delicate scent of spices weaving through the air. It’s a place where time slows just enough to savor moments, conversations, and flavors without rush.

The atmosphere here is unpretentious yet rich in character. With limited seating, every visit naturally carries a sense of closeness, not only between diners but also between kitchen and table. Each dish that arrives feels carefully composed, almost like an invitation to explore a story told through vibrant, colorful ingredients and subtle seasoning. The food’s harmony of textures—from the crispness of stuffed tomatoes or grilled chili peppers to the softness of perfectly spiced couscous and rice—reflects a measured celebration of Algerian tradition balanced with a lively, contemporary spirit.

Outside, the bright baskets of fresh vegetables and fruit spill tranquility onto the street, drawing you in with promises of thoughtful, ingredient-driven meals. Inside, familiar comforts mingle with a touch of discovery—whether it’s the aromatic steam rising from a plate or the shared joy of savoring a mint-infused tea that lingers quietly long after the last sip. The experience is deeply personal; it’s a chance to feel connected to a vibrant culture through food that honors both its roots and its capacity to surprise.

Rue d’Alger is not about spectacle but about presence. It’s a place where the act of dining invites you to pause, appreciate and return again—for the welcoming energy, the gentle artistry in every dish, and that rare, lingering feeling of having found somewhere quietly special in the busy rhythm of the city.

Best food I've had in Amsterdam. Hands down. It's a small little place, limited seating, but the guys who run it are so good at what they do, they might as well be artists. The food presentation is amazing, the taste is out of this world and I'm even just hooked in their music. The food is garnished so well, with amazing stuff. Pickled pepper and stuffed tomatoes. You cannot go wrong ordering from this place. And definitely don't forget the baklava

The term hidden gem gets thrown around a lot these days but there is nowhere more fitting of this description than this cosy Algerian spot in Amsterdam. It’s so good that on our short trip to the city, we dined here twice and I wish we could have eaten here for every meal! The array of colourful vegetables and fruit held in baskets outside the restaurant lure you in and everything from the food, to the service to the decor from thereon is just as perfect. Yousef and Nadir who manage the store are incredibly hospitable taking the time to explain how everything works and regularly checking in to make sure you are ok with your meal. And speaking of the meal, where do I even begin? Everything is so flavourful and fresh. The vegetable dishes are cooked to perfection and the choice of meat served is always tender and moist. Honestly if I was a vegetable, I would be honoured to be picked to be used in a dish at Rue d’Alger!! On our second visit, we also tried the Algerian baklawa and fresh mint tea, both a yummy and refreshing ending to our meal. The thing I love most about their food is that it’s filling but not heavy - the portions are perfect and everything feels so nourishing and light. I can’t recommend Rue d’Alger enough. This is an absolute must visit if you’re visiting Amsterdam and if you’re lucky enough to live in Amsterdam, you should be dining here every day (I know I would!)

Food was SO GOOD. Lots of options. You can opt to pick 1 meat + 2 veg or 3 veg with a base (spiced rice or couscous). I chose the spiced rice, chickpeas, mushrooms and shakshuka. My friend has the chicken, beetroot and shaksuka. They then pop it in the oven and serve it with grilled chili pepper and tomato stuffed with cheese. The outside of your dish ends up getting crispy and everything inside is warm and fluffy. Heavenly. The shakshuka might be the most flavourful one I’ve ever tried, everything was so flavourful, homey and just delicious. People were super nice. There were no seats left and it was a nice day, so the guy cleared up the bench outside that was holding the baskets of (very beautiful and plump!!!) fresh veggies, for us to sit and another bench to put our plates on. Whole time we were ‘mmmm’ing and ‘oouuuh’ing as we tried each bite. Tried the baklava too, very nutty compared to the other ones I’ve tried. It was filled with walnuts and also very good. We came on a Saturday after spin, and we left feeling very full but not ‘heavy’. Later in the afternoon they serve these tarts (which were a bit too late for). Would defo come back to try them. Anyway highly recommend!!!

That was a very nice surprise, excellent Algerian food, couscous or rice with vegetables and chicken (if you wish). Very colorful and aromatic. Not heavy at all and very tasty. I highly recommend it.

I can’t stress enough how good Rue d’Alger made me feel. I stopped in for dinner my first night in Amsterdam, and the staff (I wish I had asked his name) was warm, welcoming, funny, and made me feel like family. The space is cozy, artistic, and unique. I had the grilled chicken, a couple sides, and a pastry, everything was fresh and delicious. My mouth is watering just writing this. Thank you for making Amsterdam more memorable!

Delicious Algerian food with vegan and meat options. Every dish was masterfully made, fresh and colourful. You get to choose a combination of several vegetables and meat with rice or couscous. The exterior and interior include a variety of fresh fruits and veggies which makes the atmosphere truly special. The owner’s warm welcome made us feel right at home and enhanced the overall homemade and wholesome dining experience. Highly recommend!
